Tsushima Tenno Festival
The Greatest Summer Festival of Owari
The Tsushima Tenno Festival has over 400 years of history as the grand summer festival of Tsushima Shrine. Held every year on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of July, it was once counted among the "Three Great Festivals Under Heaven" during the Edo period.
Lantern Boats at the Evening Festival
The highlight is the "maki-wara boat" event at Saturday's evening festival. Five boats decorated with 365 lanterns create a dreamlike scene reflected on the lake of Tenno River Park.
Morning Festival Mikoshi
At Sunday's morning festival, a ritual called "seiro" takes place where mikoshi cross the river. The sight of white-clad bearers carrying the portable shrine into the water is magnificent.
Tsushima Shrine
Tsushima Shrine, the venue for the festival, enshrines "Tsushima Gozu Tenno" and is the head shrine for all Tsushima and Tenno shrines nationwide, known as a deity protecting against epidemic diseases.
