Aomori Nebuta Festival
One of the Three Great Festivals of Tohoku, the Aomori Nebuta Festival runs August 2–7. Giant three-dimensional illuminated floats and the dynamic dancing of "haneto" (jumping participants) enthrall massive crowds.
Festival Features
- Large Nebuta: Over 20 floats up to 5m tall and 9m wide parade through the streets - Haneto Dancers: Anyone can participate in the "Rassera!" chanting dance in rented costumes - Harbor Finale: The last night (August 7) ends with harbor floats and fireworks - Nebuta Grand Prix: Annual judging awards the best float
Viewing Tips
- Paid seating: Purchase through Aomori Prefecture Tourism or travel agencies - Free viewing: Standing along the parade route is possible
Getting There
- From JR Aomori Station: about 10 minutes on foot to the route
Tips
Accommodation books up 6+ months ahead. Float workshop tours are possible before evening parades start. Festivities begin with a pre-festival event on August 2.
