Mt. Hakkoda

Mt. Hakkoda south of Aomori City is a group of volcanoes with Odake (1,584m) as its highest peak. One of Japan's heaviest snowfall regions, its winter rime ice creates magical otherworldly scenes.

Highlights

- Rime Ice: Giant "snow monster" rime ice formations visible December–March - Hakkoda Ropeway: Popular for viewing rime ice from the summit station - Kenashitai Marsh: A hidden high-altitude wetland panorama within the mountains - Sukayu Onsen: Famous 1,000-person cypress bath designated a National Scenic Site

Activities

- Winter: skiing, snowshoeing, rime ice viewing - Summer: mountain climbing, alpine flower viewing, hiking

Getting There

- From JR Aomori Station by bus to Hakkoda Ropeway: about 1 hour - From Aomori Airport by car: about 50 minutes

Tips

Rime ice peaks in January–February. The ropeway closes in strong winds — always check the forecast before going. Sukayu's hinoki cypress bath is an exceptional experience.
