Hotokegaura: Mysterious Rock Formations of the Shimokita Peninsula
Hotokegaura
On the western coast of Shimokita Peninsula in Mutsu, Aomori, Hotokegaura features bizarre greenish-white tuff formations rising 30โ100m along the shoreline. Named the "Shore of Buddha" for rock shapes resembling Buddhist figures, it is a designated Natural Monument and Scenic Site.

Getting There
- From Sai Port in Mutsu by sightseeing boat: about 45 minutes (advance reservation required) - Boats also available from Shimohuro Onsen
Season
Boats operate late April through October only. JulyโAugust offers calmest seas.
Tips
Book the boat in advance. Weather cancellations happen, so allow flexibility. A Shimokita Peninsula drive combining Hotokegaura and Osorezan is highly recommended.
