On the outskirts of Aomori City, Sannai-Maruyama is Japan's largest Jomon period settlement, flourishing 5,900โ€“4,200 years ago. In 2021, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of "Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan."

Highlights

- Six-Pillar Structure (Reconstructed): Six chestnut pillars over 1m in diameter recreating an ancient landmark - Large Pit Dwelling: Reconstructed 32-meter community hall - Jomon Jiyukan: Exhibition facility with artifacts and hands-on cultural experiences - Suspension Bridge: Walking path through the site evoking ancient life

Jomon Culture

Lacquerware, jade ornaments, and other sophisticated crafts excavated here prove the Jomon era had a rich material culture.

- From JR Aomori Station by bus: about 20 minutes - From Aomori Airport by car: about 20 minutes

Tips

Site entry is free (facility fee applies). A guided tour deepens understanding significantly. Summer outdoor events are held at the site.
