Nokogiri Mountain: Sheer Cliffs and the Spectacular "Hell Lookout"
The Thrill of the Hell Lookout
Nokogiri Mountain in Kyonan Town, Chiba has the "Jigoku Nozoki" (Hell Lookout) near the summit, an observation platform jutting out from sheer cliffs. The sensation of leaning out over the 100m cliff is beyond imagination in terms of thrill, making it a popular tourist attraction.
Nihon-ji Giant Buddha and Stone Statues
"Nihon-ji" temple on the mountainside has Japan's largest stone Buddha (Yakushi Rurikounyorai) at 31.05m. Many stone statues including the 30m Hyakushaku Kannon are scattered through the mountain, popular as power spots.
Ropeway Scenic Views
The Nokogiri Mountain Ropeway provides easy access from the base to near the summit. Views from the ropeway are spectacular, extending to Tokyo Bay and the Miura Peninsula across the water.
