Water Township "Little Edo" of Sawara

Sawara (Katori City) is a historic water township with Edo-period merchant storehouses lining the Ono River. The riverside townscape is designated an Important Traditional Building Preservation District, and views from river boat tours are exceptional.

Hometown of Ino Tadataka

Sawara is known as the hometown of Ino Tadataka (1745-1818), who created Japan's first surveyed national map. The city has an Ino Tadataka Memorial Museum to learn about his achievements and map-making history.

Sawara Grand Festivals

The "Sawara Grand Festival" is a traditional festival held twice yearly in summer (July) and autumn (October), with large floats parading through the town. Registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, it attracts many visitors.
