Shimanami Kaido Cycling: A Spectacular Route Connecting Seto Inland Sea Islands by Bridges
Shimanami Kaido: The Sacred Ground for Cyclists
The Nishiseto Expressway (nickname: Shimanami Kaido) connecting Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture with Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture is a route approximately 70 kilometers long connecting Honshu and Shikoku via 6 islands and 7 bridges. All bridges have dedicated bicycle and pedestrian paths, attracting attention from cyclists worldwide as "one of the world's greatest cycling routes."
Appeal of Each Island
Innoshima (birthplace of hassaku citrus, Murakami pirates), Ikuchijima (Setoda lemon production area), Omishima (Oyamazumi Shrine, Japan's largest armor collection), Hakatajima (Hakata salt), and Oshima (Karo Mountain observation deck) each have unique appeal.
Rental Bicycles and Beginner Courses
Rental bicycle bases are at major ports including Imabari and Onomichi, with electric bicycles also rentable. Taking 2 days to ride the full route (approximately 70km) is popular, but for beginners, partial courses such as Imabari to Omishima (approximately 40km) are also recommended.
Sacred Ground for Cyclists and Roadside Stations
A "Sacred Ground for Cyclists" monument in Imabari City is popular as a commemorative photo spot. Rest at roadside stations on each island while enjoying local cuisine.
