Kumakogen: Clear Highlands Spreading on the Roof of Shikoku
Kumakogen Town in Kamiukena District, Ehime Prefecture, is a highland area at 700โ900 meters elevation spreading at the southern foot of the Ishizuchi mountain range. It is a popular summer resort with cool air even in summer (few days exceeding 30ยฐC maximum temperature) and access approximately 1 hour from Matsuyama city.
Kumakogen Astronomical Observatory
"Kumakogen Astronomical Observatory" is an observatory utilizing the clear air of highlands with little light pollution. The universe can be observed with a 105cm reflecting telescope (one of Japan's largest telescopes owned by Ehime University), with nighttime observation sessions also held. It is a popular spot for astronomy enthusiasts and families.
Base for Shikoku Karst
Kumakogen is a southern access base for Shikoku Karst. Shikoku Karst (Mezurudaira) can be accessed approximately 1 hour by car via Kumakogen.
Ohenro Pilgrimage (Near Temples 44โ45)
Kumakogen Town has Shikoku 88 Temples "Daiho-ji Temple (No. 44)" and "Iwaya-ji Temple (No. 45)." In particular, Iwaya-ji Temple is famous as a sacred site with the unusual structure of hall buildings built into a giant rock cave (cavern).
Access
Approximately 1 hour by car from Matsuyama city via National Route 33. Route buses "Kumakogen Line" also operate from Matsuyama Station (approximately 1 hour).
