Shikoku Karst: Sky Ranch and Limestone Groups Spreading Above the Clouds
Shikoku Karst: A Spectacular Sky Karst Plateau
Shikoku Karst spreading along the border of Ehime Prefecture and Kochi Prefecture is one of "Japan's Three Great Karsts" alongside Akiyoshidai (Yamaguchi Prefecture) and Hiraodai (Fukuoka Prefecture). The landscape of countless limestone rock masses lined up on high ground at 1,400–1,500 meters elevation is described as "a world apart in the sky."
Mezurudaira
"Mezurudaira," the center of Shikoku Karst, is a vast grassland area at approximately 1,400 meters elevation. The contrast between white limestone and green grassland is beautiful, with an idyllic pastoral landscape of grazing cattle spreading out. A mountain hut called "Hizuru-so" is also available for accommodation.
Tengu Plateau
On the Kochi Prefecture side, "Tengu Plateau" has a visitor center developed as a learning facility for karst topography. 360-degree mountain panoramas can be enjoyed from the surrounding hiking courses.
Sea of Clouds and Starry Sky
Due to the high elevation, seas of clouds sometimes form on early mornings from spring to autumn. The fantastical sight of limestone floating in a sea of clouds, and stargazing at high altitude with less light pollution are also appealing.
Access
Car access is basic. Approximately 2–3 hours from Matsuyama and Ozu via National Route 197 and Prefectural Route 304. During winter (December–March), the road may be impassable due to snow and ice.
