Omishima: The Sacred Ground of the Sea Deity Protecting Maritime Traffic
Omishima in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, is an island located in the middle of the Shimanami Kaido (Nishiseto Expressway). It is a sacred site with "Oyamazumi Shrine" (Oyamazumi-jinja), the grand shrine of Mishima and Yamazumi shrines nationwide, with a history of protecting Japan's maritime traffic since ancient times.
Oyamazumi Shrine

Within the grounds is a large camphor tree said to be 2,600 years old (national Natural Monument), creating a mysterious atmosphere. Armor and weapons designated as national treasures and important cultural properties are displayed as Japan's largest collection in the National Treasure Hall.
