Echizen Washi is traditional Japanese paper made in Echizen City, Fukui said to have over 1,500 years of history. There is a legend that "Kawakamigonen" (deity of Okata Shrine and Otaki Shrine) transmitted paper-making techniques, with a shrine enshrining the deity of paper still gathering worshippers.
Echizen Washi Technology Supporting Japan
Echizen Washi has the highest standard in both strength and quality, with Echizen Washi techniques also used in Japanese banknote raw materials. Still today, many hand-made paper craftsmen and workshops gather in Imadaichi district, Echizen City, protecting traditional techniques.
Washi Experience and Papyrus Hall
Echizen City has "Echizen Washi no Sato Papyrus Hall" where hand-made washi experiences can be enjoyed. Actual experience from paper-making to drying is available, with creating your own original washi a popular experience. Washi product exhibitions and sales are also conducted, popular as souvenirs.
