Ichinomiya of Echizen: Kehi Jingu
Kehi Jingu is a shrine in Tsuruga City, Fukui, the ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of Echizen Province (old province name for Fukui Prefecture). It enshrines Kehi-no-Okami, deity of food and agriculture, as the main enshrined deity with over 2,000 years of history.
One of Japan's Three Great Wooden Torii
Kehi Jingu's great torii is an 11m wooden torii known as one of "Japan's Three Great Wooden Torii" alongside Kasuga Taisha in Nara and Miyajima in Hiroshima. The vermilion great torii is the symbol of the grounds' scenery.
Matsuo Basho and Kehi Jingu
Matsuo Basho visited Kehi Jingu on his Oku no Hosomichi journey, said to have composed the haiku "Meigetsu ya / Hokkoku biyori / sadame naki." A Basho bronze statue is installed on the grounds, also an important place for literary travelers.
