Japan's Oldest Existing Castle Tower
Maruoka Castle is located in Maruoka Town, Sakai City, Fukui, known as having "Japan's oldest existing castle tower" (currently various theories exist). It is said to have been built around 1576 by Katsutoyo, nephew of Shibata Katsuie, characterized by roof tiles of Shakudani stone called "stone tiles."
Kasumi Castle and Sakura
Maruoka Castle is also called "Kasumi Castle." In spring, about 400 cherry trees surrounding the castle bloom, selected in the "100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan." During cherry blossom season, many viewers visit with nighttime cherry blossom illumination also held.
Viewing Inside the Castle Tower
Inside Maruoka Castle tower features steep staircases for viewing the three-story three-floor interior. Views of Maruoka townscape and surrounding scenery can be seen from the top floor. Historical material exhibitions related to Maruoka Castle are also inside.
