🦕 Fukui|May 11, 2026

Ancient Gateway to the Sea

Tsuruga Port is located in Tsuruga City, Fukui, a port that has flourished since ancient times as the gateway for trade with the continent. It has carved its name in history as one of the endpoints and starting points of the Silk Road for receiving continental culture.

Port of Humanity: Tsuruga

Before and after World War II, many Jewish refugees fled to Japan with "visas of life" issued by Chiune Sugihara at the Japanese consulate in Kaunas, Lithuania, landing at Tsuruga Port. "Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum" exhibits this historical story, allowing learning the moving history.

Tsuruga Sightseeing Spots

Tsuruga City has many sightseeing spots including Kehi Jingu, the Museum, and Tsuruga Port (red brick warehouse). The Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga (2024) has greatly improved access from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
