Amaou: A Premium Brand Strawberry That Fukuoka is Proud Of
"Amaou" is a strawberry variety developed by Fukuoka Prefectural Agricultural Research Institute and registered in 2001. Named "Amaou" from the initials of "amai (sweet), marui (round), okii (large), umai (delicious)." Characterized by larger size than ordinary strawberries with high sugar content and juicy flavor.
Amaou Cultivation and Production Areas
Main production areas are the Chikugo region in southern Fukuoka Prefecture (Kurume City, Ukiha City, Yame City, etc.) and around Hakata. The harvest season runs from December to May, with thorough quality management through greenhouse cultivation. Production volume and brand value both boast the highest national standards.
Strawberry Picking
Strawberry picking can be enjoyed at strawberry farms throughout Fukuoka Prefecture. The experience of eating freshly picked amaou on the spot is exceptional. Some farms offer plans with milk or condensed milk. Advance confirmation is recommended as many require reservations.
Amaou Sweets
Many stores in Fukuoka City offer "amaou sweets." Amaou shortcake, tarts, gelato, jam, and juice can be enjoyed. Amaou-related products are abundantly stocked at souvenir shops at Hakata Station and Fukuoka Airport.
Access
Strawberry picking farms are concentrated in the Chikugo region; travel from JR Hakata Station by train or bus toward Kurume and Yame (varies by farm).
