Chikugo Wine: Wine Culture in Ukiha and the Chikugo Region

The Chikugo region centered on Ukiha City and Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is the "fruit homeland" with active cultivation of grapes, figs, persimmons, and pears. Leveraging the temperature difference between day and night typical of basins and rich soil, wineries and wine grape cultivation have been increasing in recent years.

Ukiha Winery and Farmhouse Restaurants

Ukiha City has multiple small wineries manufacturing and selling wine from locally grown grapes. Farmhouse restaurants allow enjoying local ingredient dishes paired with wine. Particularly during harvest season (Septemberโ€“November), it bustles with many fruit picking tourists.

Chikugo River and Fruit Line

The "Fruit Road" is developed along the river terrace of Chikugo River flowing through Ukiha City, with grape, fig, pear, and persimmon farms lining it. It is an area where fruit picking can be enjoyed while driving.

White Wall Townscape of Yoshii

The white wall townscape from the Edo-Meiji period remains in Yoshii Town, Ukiha City, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. Travel combining historic townscape and winery tourism is popular.

Access

Nearest station is JR Kyudai Main Line "Ukiha Station." Approximately 1 hour by limited express from JR Hakata Station. Or accessible by bus from JR Kurume Station.
