Dazaifu Tenmangu Plum Blossoms: The Deep Connection Between Lord Michizane and Plum

Dazaifu Tenmangu (Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture) is the head shrine of 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines nationwide enshrining the God of Learning, Sugawara Michizane (845–903). As Michizane chanted "When the east wind blows, send your fragrance, oh plum blossoms — even without your master, do not forget spring," plum has an inseparable connection with Lord Michizane.

Plum Highlights Within the Grounds

Approximately 200 varieties and 6,000 plum trees are planted within the grounds, with red and white plum adorning the premises. The "Tobiume (flying plum)" in front of the main hall is most famous — the legendary tree said to have flown overnight from Kyoto to Dazaifu to follow its master when Lord Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu. Known for blooming earlier than other plum trees each year in early February.

Plum Festival

The "Plum Festival" is held annually from early February to early March, with Kagura performances, dedication ceremonies, and various events taking place. The period when plum fragrance wafts through the grounds particularly bustles with many worshippers.

Umekaemochi

Dazaifu specialty "umekaemochi" is a grilled mochi of smooth bean paste wrapped in rice flour skin. The fragrant umekaemochi grilled at established shops along the approach is a must-eat sweet for Dazaifu tourism.

Access

Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Line "Dazaifu Station." Approximately 40 minutes from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station including transfer.
