Itoshima: Fukuoka's New Resort Area
Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is located just west of Fukuoka City. It is gaining popularity as a "Fukuoka resort area" lined with beautiful coastline facing Genkai Sea, stylish cafes, farm produce direct sales outlets, and surf shops. Easily accessible from central Fukuoka via JR Chikuhi Line, many tourists visit on weekends.
Surfing and Ocean Swimming
Itoshima's coastline has good wave quality and is known as a surfing mecca. Ocean swimming can also be enjoyed at beaches including "Keya Beach," "Kafu Coast," and "Nokita Coast." Many surf shops and surf schools also line the coastline.
Itoshima Gourmet
Itoshima has active agriculture and fishing emphasizing "locally sourced, locally consumed," with restaurants and cafes using fresh vegetables and seafood being popular. In particular, "Itoshima oysters (kaki-goya oyster huts)" are a winter seasonal tradition, with the popular style of grilling and eating cultivated oysters directly at seaside huts.
Keya no Ooto
"Keya no Ooto" in the northwestern part of Itoshima City is Japan's largest class cave made of basalt. Sightseeing boats allow entry into the cave (operations vary by season and weather).
Access
JR Chikuhi Line "Chikuzen Maebaru Station" is the base for Itoshima tourism. Approximately 30 minutes from Tenjin with direct service on Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line. The coastline can also be toured by rental bicycle or rental car.
