Yawata Steel Works: A World Heritage Industrial Site That Supported Japan's Modernization
Yawata Steel Works: A Symbol of Japan's Modernization
The "Government-operated Yawata Steel Works (Kanei Yahata Seitetsusho)" located in Yahata Higashi Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is Japan's first modern steel plant, which started operations in 1901. It is the product of a national project that used coal from the Chikuho coalfield and iron ore from China's Daye Iron Mine to support Japan's modernization and military strengthening.
World Heritage Registration
In 2015, it was registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site as a component of "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding, and Coal Mining." The former main office of the Government-operated Yawata Steel Works (red brick building) is preserved today, with exterior viewing possible.
Former Main Office and Historic Site Visits
The "former main office" is a Renaissance-style building (constructed 1899) characterized by red brick and white exterior walls. Public access is exterior only, but interior viewing is possible during special public periods. A tourism area where industrial heritage coexists with parks has been developed in the surrounding "Higashida District."
Space World Site and New Facilities
Commercial facilities including "Aeon Mall Yahata Higashi" have been built on the former Space World site, allowing combining tourism with shopping.
