Nakasu Yatai Food Stalls: The Symbol of Hakata Nights That the World Envies

The Nakasu area in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, is an entertainment district sandwiched between the Naka River and Hakata River. Approximately 100 food stalls line the Nakasu, Tenjin, and Nagahama food stall districts, symbolizing "Hakata nights" that begin operating at dusk.

Appeal of Food Stalls

The appeal of food stalls is the "sense of unity" of eating side by side with strangers at counter seats. Various dishes can be enjoyed including ramen, oden, yakitori, motsu-nabe, and teppanyaki. Listening to local stories while talking with the stall master is also a fun experience.

History of Nakasu Food Stalls

Nakasu food stalls began to support the food of ordinary people during the postwar food shortage, reaching their peak during the high economic growth period. Currently Fukuoka City protects food stall culture as intangible cultural heritage, also supporting successor development.

Food Stall Rules and Manners

Food stalls are officially licensed restaurants. Bringing outside food and drinks is prohibited, and it is good manners to vacate your seat promptly after eating. The atmosphere makes it easy to enter alone, but foreign language support varies by stall.

Access

Just a short walk from Subway "Nakasukawabata Station." Food stalls operate from after sunset (around 6 PM) until late at night. Since many stalls close on rainy days, checking the weather is recommended.
