Onga River: Kitakyushu's Largest River That Supported Chikuho
Onga River (Ongagawa), flowing through northern Fukuoka Prefecture, is Fukuoka Prefecture's longest first-class river at 61 kilometers. An important river utilized for coal transport from the Chikuho coalfield that supported modernization. Currently the Onga River mouth (Ashiya Town) where mudskippers inhabit and natural scenery where canoeing and fishing can be enjoyed remain.
Nature of Onga River
Onga River's floodplain is rich in nature, with many wild birds and fish species inhabiting it. Seasonal flowers including spring rape blossoms and autumn lycoris adorn the riverside. Ayu fishing is popular in the middle reaches, with many anglers visiting in summer.
Ashiya Town and River Mouth
Ashiya Town at Onga River's mouth is known for mudskipper (fish living in tidal flats) observation. "Ashiya Beach" and parks near the "Onga River Estuary Weir" are also good spots for nature observation.
Cycling and Riverside Strolling
Developed cycling roads run along Onga River, allowing cycling while enjoying the scenery. Many cherry tree-lined roads also run along the river, a popular route for spring cherry blossom cycling.
Access
Onga River flows along JR Chikuho Main Line, with access to the riverside from stations including Nogata, Nakama, and Mizumaki. Approximately 1 hour from JR Hakata Station.
