Baron Park (Soma Nakamura Castle Ruins)

Baron Park (Baryo Koen) in Soma, Fukushima, is a park developed on the ruins of Soma Nakamura Castle from the Edo period. It conveys the history of the Soma domain castle town and is one of the premier cherry blossom sites in the Hamadori region.

Highlights

- Cherry Blossoms (Mid-April): Contrast of castle ruins stone walls and approximately 400 cherry trees in bloom - Nakamura Castle Stone Walls: Remains recalling the castle's Soma domain era - Soma Shrine (Soma Nakamura Shrine): Shrine dedicated to the Soma family's guardian deity - Baron Park Views: Panoramic view from the elevated grounds overlooking the city

Connection to Soma Nomaoi

- Soma Nomaoi (July) is centered on Nakamura Shrine, Ota Shrine, and Odaka Shrine - Soma City is the heart of this traditional event

Getting There

- 10–15-minute walk from JR Joban Line Soma Station - About 10 minutes by car from Joban Expressway Soma IC

Tips

Soma City suffered tsunami damage in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, but with the strong local will to "preserve the Nomaoi tradition," reconstruction has steadily progressed.
