Nakatsugawa City in southeastern Gifu Prefecture is one of Japan's leading chestnut production areas spreading at the foot of Mt. Enasan. "Kuri-kinton" is this area's autumn-limited specialty confection, a simple Japanese confection of steamed chestnuts kneaded with sugar.
Long-Established Chestnut Confectionery
Many long-established Japanese confectionery shops continuing from the Edo era are concentrated in Nakatsugawa, each shop making their own kuri-kinton. Sightseeing to compare and taste kuri-kinton from long-established shops including "Kawakamiya," "Suya," and "Nitaro" is popular.
Tourism with Nakasendo Magome-juku
Nakatsugawa City has Nakasendo post town "Magome-juku." Beautiful slopes and cobblestones of Magome-juku known as Shimazaki Toson's birthplace, a journey combining autumn kuri-kinton is popular.
