Famous Spring to Cure "40,000 Ailments"

Shima Onsen's name is said to derive from a legend about curing "shiman (40,000) ailments." Located deep along the Shima River in Nakanojo Town, it has welcomed therapeutic visitors for centuries.

Showa-Era Retro Atmosphere

The hot spring town has inns preserving the mood of the Showa era. Sekizenkan's main building is said to be Japan's oldest wooden inn structure, and is rumored to be one of the inspirations for Miyazaki's "Spirited Away."

Valley Scenery

Surrounded by the clear Shima River and deep greenery, the resort is beautiful in all seasons. Autumn foliage turns the valley to brilliant colors, allowing the combination of hot springs and autumn leaves.
