Shima Onsen's name is said to derive from a legend about curing "shiman (40,000) ailments." Located deep along the Shima River in Nakanojo Town, it has welcomed therapeutic visitors for centuries.
Showa-Era Retro Atmosphere
The hot spring town has inns preserving the mood of the Showa era. Sekizenkan's main building is said to be Japan's oldest wooden inn structure, and is rumored to be one of the inspirations for Miyazaki's "Spirited Away."
