Tomioka Silk Mill was established in 1872 as Japan's first model government factory. It served as the introduction point for French silk manufacturing technology, driving Japan's modern industrialization. Registered as a World Heritage Site in 2014.
Architectural Beauty of Red Brick
The reeling factory, east and west cocoon warehouses, and other buildings were designed by French engineer Paul Brunat using timber-framed brick construction. These structures represent a fusion of Meiji-era building techniques and Western culture.
The Silk Road "Silk Country Gunma"
Together with Tajima Yahei residence, Takayama-sha ruins, and Arafune Cold Air Pit, three sites form the World Heritage "Tomioka Silk Mill and Silk Industry Heritage Sites," preserving the cultural landscape of silk production from silkworms.
