Rishiri and Rebun Islands

Off Wakkanai in northern Hokkaido, Rishiri and Rebun offer remote island nature impossible to find on the mainland — crystal-clear seas, wide skies, and dramatic scenery.

Rishiri Island

- Mt. Rishiri (Rishiri Fuji): A 1,721m volcanic cone resembling Mt. Fuji - Rishiri Kelp: Source of Japan's finest quality kombu seaweed - Seafood: Sea urchin, scallops, and abalone served ultra-fresh

Rebun Island

- Alpine Flowers: The "Floating Flower Island" where alpine species bloom at sea level - Scoton Cape: One of Japan's northernmost capes - 8-Hour Trekking Course: Full island traverse on foot

Getting There

- From Wakkanai by ferry: 1h40m to Rishiri, 2h to Rebun - From New Chitose Airport to Wakkanai by plane: about 55 minutes

Tips

Best visited June–August. Prepare for strong winds. Sea urchin bowl (uni-don) is essential eating on Rishiri.
