Lake Toya in southwestern Hokkaido is a caldera lake formed by Mt. Usu's eruptions. Uninhabited Nakajima Island floats at its center. The area hosted the 2008 G8 Toyako Summit.

Tips
The nightly fireworks are best watched from a lakeside ryokan. The Mt. Usu eruption site walk offers a rare chance to feel the raw power of volcanic geology.
