Kobe Harbor and Harborland: Port Town with Exotic Atmosphere Breathing History of Opening to Foreign Trade
Kobe Harbor and Harborland
Intercultural Exchange Beginning with Port Opening
With Kobe Port's opening in 1868, a foreign settlement was established and Western, Chinese, and South Asian cultures flowed in. This influence remains strongly in Kobe's food culture, architecture, and fashion as the source of "Kobe-ness."
Japan's Three Great Night Views
The night views of Kobe cityscape and port viewed from Rokko and Maya mountains are one of "Japan's Three Great Night Views." Beautiful night views can also be enjoyed from Harborland's Meriken Park and Mosaic.
Harborland
Harborland, redeveloped on the former national railway Minatogawa Station site, is Kobe's new waterfront. A family-friendly area with umie Mosaic and Kobe Anpanman Children's Museum.
Meriken Park
Meriken Park, developed in 1987, is where the harbor meets the city. The Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park has exhibits conveying the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake damage, also known as a place for raising disaster prevention awareness.
