Tamba Black Soybeans
Tanba Sasayama is nationally known as the producing area of "Tamba black soybeans," Japan's finest black soybeans. Harvested in autumn (October-November), the large-grained, flavorful black soybeans are prized nationwide as New Year's black beans.
Tamba Chestnuts and Matsutake
Tanba Sasayama is also famous as the producing area of "Tamba chestnuts" and "Tamba matsutake mushrooms." Tamba chestnuts in particular are highly regarded as Japan's finest Japanese chestnuts, with diverse chestnut dishes like chestnut rice, kuri-kinton, and chestnut yokan (sweet jelly) available.
Sasayama Castle Town
The center of Tanba Sasayama City retains castle town streetscapes over 400 years old with samurai residences, merchant houses, and storehouses visible. The Kawahara-cho merchant house district is designated as an Important Preservation District.
Rural Experience Tourism
Agricultural and nature experiences like black soybean harvesting, matsutake gathering, and satoyama hiking are enjoyable. Accommodation at farmhouse minshuku and rural cuisine using Tamba ingredients are special experiences unavailable in the city.
