Tamba Ware: One of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, 800-Year Tradition Ceramics Village
Tamba Ware
Tradition of the Six Ancient Kilns
Tamba ware, originating in the late Heian to early Kamakura period, still has over 60 kilns gathered in Konda-cho, Tanba Sasayama City, Hyogo. Rustic works with natural glaze in persimmon orange and blue-gray are highly valued in the tea ceremony world.
Kiln Strolling
Kilns in Konda district are within walking or cycling distance for touring, enjoyable with work purchases and viewing at each kiln. At the autumn "Tamba Ware Festival," many kilns hold special sales for more affordable work acquisition than usual.
Ceramics Experiences
Multiple kilns offer ceramics experiences including hand-building and wheel throwing. Works created can also be mailed later.
Tanba Sasayama's Food Culture
Tanba Sasayama City is a food treasure with "Tamba black soybeans," "Tamba chestnuts," and "Tamba matsutake mushrooms." Combined with the old castle town streetscapes near Sasayama Castle, a trip enjoying Tamba ware and food can be made.
