Okakura Tenshin and Goura

The Goura Coast in Kitaibaraki City is where art visionary Okakura Tenshin spent his later years. The rugged Pacific coastline became the source of his artistic vision and philosophy.

The Hexagonal Pavilion

Goura's iconic feature is the hexagonal teahouse perched on ocean rocks, said to have been designed by Tenshin himself. Swept away in the 2011 tsunami, it was faithfully restored in 2012.

Ibaraki Prefectural Art Museum

The museum houses works by Tenshin, Yokoyama Taikan, and other associated artists in a superb location overlooking the Pacific, combining art appreciation with natural grandeur.
