Lake Kasumigaura: Life on the Shores of Japan's Second Largest Lake
Japan's Second Largest Lake
Lake Kasumigaura at approximately 220 km² is Japan's second largest lake after Lake Biwa. The vast lake spreading across the flat Kanto Plain reflects the sky, creating beautiful scenery.
Sail Fishing Boats
The iconic sight of Kasumigaura is the white-sailed "hobiki-bune" (sail fishing boats). This traditional smelt fishing method dating from the Meiji period sees boats fishing in autumn. Today they operate as tourist vessels.
Lakeside Cycling
The "Kasumigaura Cycling Road" runs along the lakeshore, offering scenic cycling. Rental bicycles are available, and riding with the refreshing lake breeze is a special experience.
