Higashi Chayagai: Kanazawa's Premier Edo-Period Geisha District
Edo-Period Geisha District Revival
Higashi Chayagai is one of Japan's leading geisha districts in Kanazawa City. This geisha quarter, opened in 1820 (Bunsei 3) with domain approval, retains intact the Edo-period atmosphere of latticed and red-latticework townhouse buildings. Some teahouses still offer teahouse experiences.
Kanazawa Traditional Culture
Higashi Chayagai has craft shops, cafes, sweet shops, and gift stores lined up, with many shops selling Kanazawa traditional crafts (gold leaf, Kutani ware, Wajima lacquer). Walking slowly along the cobblestone alleys, visitors can touch Edo-period culture.
Kanazawa's Nighttime Charm
Nighttime Higashi Chayagai creates a fantastical atmosphere with lights filtering through latticed windows, with different charm than daytime. Nighttime Kanazawa where shamisen sounds echo from restaurants and teahouses has exceptional atmosphere.
