Kanazawa 21st Century Museum opened in 2004 as Kanazawa City's contemporary art museum, with architecture by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa highly acclaimed worldwide. The circular building is designed accessible from all four sides, with concept of "a museum open to the city like a park."
Swimming Pool is Popular
The permanent exhibit "Swimming Pool" by Argentine artist Leandro Erlich allows the experience of people on the surface and people below meeting "underwater" through a glass floor. Known for being photogenic, it is always a popular exhibit.
Free Areas and Special Exhibitions
The museum is divided into paid and free areas, with free areas also offering outdoor art works and some exhibits. Special exhibitions are held year-round allowing experience of contemporary art from Japan and abroad.
