Nagamachi Samurai District: Earthen Wall Alleyways Where Kaga Domain Warriors Lived
City Where Kaga's Samurai Lived
Nagamachi in Kanazawa City is the former samurai district where upper and middle-class Kaga domain samurai lived, with alleyways of earthen walls and cobblestones still remaining. One reason Kanazawa is famous as a "castle town undamaged by war" is that this historical landscape has been preserved to modern times.
Interior of Samurai Residence Open to Public
The Nomura House is open to the public for viewing the interior structure of samurai residences. With tea rooms, gardens, and weapon exhibitions, visitors can experience the Kaga domain samurai lifestyle.
Winter "Komo-kake"
In winter, "komo-kake" is performed on trees facing Nagamachi's earthen walls. This traditional work of protecting trees from cold by wrapping them in straw covers is famous as a winter Kanazawa tradition.
