Near the summit of the Hachimantai Plateau (1,613m) straddling Iwate and Akita, Kagami Pond develops a striking eye-shaped pattern each May to June as residual snow melts. This "Dragon Eye" phenomenon went viral on social media and has become one of Japan's most sought-after seasonal spectacles.

Tips
The summit is cool even in summer โ bring wind and cold protection. Best Dragon Eye photos come from the elevated section of the walking trail. Crampons recommended when snow is present.
