⛩️ Iwate|May 11, 2026

Kuji Amber

Kuji City in Iwate is Japan's largest and one of the world's leading amber producing regions. Amber here formed from tree resin of the Cretaceous period approximately 90 million years ago, fossilized over vast time. Kuji amber specimens have been found with ancient insects and plants preserved inside.

Highlights

- Kuji Amber Museum: Museum covering amber's formation, history, and craftsmanship - Amber Mining Experience: Actual mine (outdoor) excavation experience (reservation required) - Amber Crafts: Jewelry-making workshop using Kuji amber - Insect Inclusions: Precious specimens with ancient insects trapped inside

Food

- Kuji Mamebu Jiru: Local soup made famous by NHK morning drama "Amachan" - Seafood: Fresh sea urchin, abalone, and salmon

Getting There

- From JR Hachinohe Line Kuji Station by taxi or bus to the amber museum: about 20 minutes - Sanriku Railway Rias Line also serves Kuji Station

Tips

The mining experience is seasonal and requires advance reservation. Kuji is the terminus of the Sanriku Railway — combining it with a coastal rail journey makes for a rich trip.
