Kuji City in Iwate is Japan's largest and one of the world's leading amber producing regions. Amber here formed from tree resin of the Cretaceous period approximately 90 million years ago, fossilized over vast time. Kuji amber specimens have been found with ancient insects and plants preserved inside.

Tips
The mining experience is seasonal and requires advance reservation. Kuji is the terminus of the Sanriku Railway — combining it with a coastal rail journey makes for a rich trip.
