⛩️ Iwate|May 11, 2026

Kitayamazaki (Tanohata Village)

Kitayamazaki in Tanohata Village, Iwate, is among the finest scenic spots on the Sanriku coast — approximately 200m-high sheer cliffs running for 8km. Called the "Alps of the Sea," it forms the core of Sanriku Reconstruction National Park.

Highlights

- First and Second Viewing Platforms: Look directly down onto vertical cliffs and crashing waves - Sightseeing Cruises: Look up at 200m cliffs from the sea (April–October) - Coastal Walking Trail: Thrilling path along the cliff edge (approx. 4km) - Hijima Island: Small island floating in the cliff-lined sea

Nearby Attractions

- Tanohata Village Cafes and Lodgings: Accommodations praised for cuisine using local ingredients - Sanriku Railway: Scenic rail line running along the clifftops

Getting There

- From Sanriku Railway Rias Line Tanohata Station by taxi: about 10 minutes - From Miyako City by car: about 40 minutes

Tips

Sightseeing cruises may be cancelled due to wave conditions. The cliff views from the platforms are intense for those with a fear of heights. On clear days the scenery stretches to the horizon.
