Kanonji Zenigata Sand Art: The Kanei-tsuho Sand Coin Continuing from the Edo Period
Zenigata Sand Art: A Giant Sand Coin Created in One Night
The Zenigata sand art drawn on the sandy beach of "Kotobiki Park" in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a sand picture said to have been created overnight by local people in 1633 (Kanei 10) to greet domain lord Ikoma Takatoshi. A giant "Kanei-tsuho" (old copper coin) picture measuring 122 meters vertically and 90 meters horizontally is drawn on the sandy beach.
Observation Deck for Viewing
While it is difficult to grasp the overall image standing on the sandy beach, looking down from the "Zenigata Observation Deck" reveals the perfect elliptical Kanei-tsuho. Designated as a national historic site as Japan's only sand picture, it is handed down that those who see it will be healthy and live long, and never struggle with money throughout their lives.
Cherry Blossoms and Pine Grove of Kotobiki Park
Kotobiki Park, where the Zenigata sand art is located, is also known as a famous cherry blossom spot. Many flower-viewing visitors arrive in spring, with the combination of sandy beach, pine grove, and cherry blossoms creating beautiful scenery.
Surrounding Sightseeing in Kanonji City
Kanonji City also has "Kotobiki Hachimangu Shrine" (near Shikoku 88 Temples No. 68 and 69) and "Kanonji Temple (No. 69)." The departure port for Ibuki Island (iriko production area), "Kanonji Port," is also here.
