Seto Inland Sea Islands: Charm of Teshima, Shodoshima, and Toyoshima Toured by Ferry
Seto Inland Sea Islands: Treasure Islands That Kagawa is Proud of
In the Seto Inland Sea offshore Kagawa Prefecture, distinctive islands including Shodoshima, Teshima, Megijima, Ogijima, and Inujima are dotted throughout. Also known as venues for the Setouchi Triennale (Seto Inland Sea Art Festival), these unique islands where art and nature coexist are attracting worldwide attention.
Appeal of Shodoshima
Shodoshima, known as "the Island of Olives," is one of Japan's leading olive production areas where olive cultivation utilizing a warm climate is conducted. The food industry of somen, soy sauce, and tsukudani is also developed, making the entire island a gourmet spot. Cultural tourist attractions including "Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Village" are also well-developed.
Characteristics of Teshima
Despite being a small island of approximately 14 square kilometers, Teshima gathers world-class museums including "Teshima Art Museum" (works by Rei Naito) and "Teshima Yokoo House" (works by Tadanori Yokoo), making it an art island. The living daily island life of agriculture and fishing still being conducted is also appealing.
Megijima and Onigashima
Megijima, offshore Takamatsu City, is an island of demon legends famous as "Onigashima Cavern." The cavern is one of Japan's largest in scale, with the island's history connected to the Momotaro legend being interesting.
Access
Accessible to each island by ferry or high-speed boat from Takamatsu Port. Access methods differ by island, so checking routes in advance is recommended.
