Atsugi and Nakatsugawa: Sweetfish Cuisine and Satoyama Scenery
Natural Sweetfish of the Nakatsugawa
The Nakatsugawa River (Sagami River tributary) flowing through Atsugi City is known as a clear stream where natural sweetfish (ayu) ascend in summer. Natural sweetfish raised in clear streams have high fragrance, a premium ingredient enjoyable in diverse preparations like salt-grilled and candied.
Sweetfish Season Opening and Fishing
Sweetfish fishing season opens in June each year, popular with clear-stream fishing enthusiasts. The fishing zone along the Nakatsugawa allows "tomozuri" (using sweetfish's territorial instinct to attract others) fishing.
Miyagase Lake and Satoyama Scenery
North of Atsugi City has Miyagase Lake (Kanagawa's largest lake), and the scenery of the lake and Tanzawa mountains is one of the especially beautiful natural spots in the greater Kanto region. Spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage combined with waterside scenery are enjoyable.
