Katsurahama, located in the southeastern part of Kochi City, is a scenic spot characterized by a beautifully bow-curved sandy beach and rough Pacific Ocean waves. Known since ancient times as a representative scenic beauty of Kochi, it is even sung about in folk songs: "Kochi in Tosa, Katsurahama, a famous place for the moon, Katsurahama."
Bronze Statue of Sakamoto Ryoma
The bronze statue of Sakamoto Ryoma (approximately 13 meters tall) standing on a small hill by the beach is a standard Kochi tourism spot. The dignified figure gazing at the Pacific Ocean symbolizes Ryoma's passion in pursuing the dream of the Restoration. The "Ryoma Festival" is held every November 15th (Ryoma's birthday and death anniversary), drawing many visitors.
Katsurahama Aquarium
"Katsurahama Aquarium" adjacent to Katsurahama is beloved as a long-established aquarium. Exhibiting marine creatures of Kochi including bonito, sea turtles, and sharks, it is popular with families.
Famous for Moon Viewing
The moonrise at Katsurahama is particularly beautiful, with many people visiting for moon viewing on the mid-autumn full moon (jugo-ya). The sight of the moon and sandy beach seen through the pine forest is exceptionally beautiful.
