Amakusa Dolphin Watching: An Emotional Experience Seeing Wild Dolphins Up Close
Amakusa Dolphin Watching: Japan's Largest Wild Dolphin Habitat Sea
The western coast of Amakusa Shimoshima (Tomioka, Goshoura area) in Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is one of Japan's leading habitats for wild common bottlenose dolphins. Over approximately 200 dolphins permanently inhabit year-round, known for very high observation rates. Dolphin watching on local fishing boats and sightseeing vessels can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Dolphin Watching Experience
Boarding a sightseeing vessel (approximately 30–60 minutes) to chase schools of dolphins. Common bottlenose dolphins have a habit of playing near ships, with dynamic behaviors including jumping while sending up spray and bow riding (riding the bow wave) observable up close.
Sunameri Observation
Small cetacean "finless porpoise" can sometimes also be seen in Amakusa's sea. Sea turtles and black-tailed gulls and other marine life can also be observed.
Tomioka Castle and Tomioka Tourism
"Tomioka Castle ruins" are also in "Tomioka" — the departure point for dolphin watching. A historic castle related to the Shimabara Rebellion, the view from the castle ruins is also wonderful.
Access
Approximately 2 hours by bus from central Kumamoto. Or by regular vessel from Misumi Port to Tomioka Port (approximately 35 minutes).
