Nekodake (Aso): Mountain Climbing on the Jagged Peaks Called "Devil's Face"
Nekodake: A Distinctive Mountain of Aso's Devil's Face Jagged Peaks
"Nekodake (elevation 1,433 meters)" located in the Aso outer rim mountains of Takamori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, is one of the five Aso mountains (Takadake, Nakadake, Eboshidake, Kishimadake, Nekodake). Characterized by unique jagged rock peaks (East Peak, West Peak, Tengu Peak), it gets its common name from looking like a "devil's face" when viewed from a distance.
Climbing Routes and Difficulty
Nekodake has multiple climbing routes. "Otodo Ridge Course (Takamori Pass Route)" is for general climbers, allowing climbing while enjoying spectacular views of the Aso outer rim. Rock faces and steep climbs are present — climbing equipment and experience required. "Tengu Peak" requires rock climbing skills — recommended with experienced parties or guides.
Views from Grasslands
From the highland grasslands (pastures around the Aso outer rim) spreading at Nekodake's foot, spectacular views of Nekodake's jagged peaks and the Aso outer rim can be enjoyed. Particularly on clear spring and autumn days, it is a spectacular scenery spot attracting many photographers.
Combination with South Aso Spring Water
Spring water spots including Shirakawa Suigen are scattered in the Nekodake foot area and South Aso. The experience of quenching thirst with clear spring water after climbing is also enjoyable.
