Aso Shrine: The General Protector of Hi no Kuni (Land of Fire) Kumamoto
"Aso Shrine" enshrined in Ichinomiya Town, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is an ancient shrine with over 2,000 years of history as the ichinomiya (highest-ranked shrine) of Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture). As the head shrine of approximately 450 Aso Shrines and Kengun Shrines nationwide, it enshrines the gods of Aso (Takivatatsu-hiko-no-mikoto and others).
Aso Shrine Gate Tower and Shrine Buildings
The "Romon (gate tower)" built in the Meiji era โ a National Important Cultural Property โ was Kyushu's largest gate tower at 18 meters wide, but collapsed in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake (foreshock M6.5, main shock M7.3). Restoration work supported by the national government is currently progressing, with work completed in December 2023 and worship resumed.
Aso's Agricultural Culture and Shinto Rituals
Many Shinto rituals related to agriculture have been performed at Aso Shrine since ancient times. Agricultural ceremonies praying for abundant harvests including spring "Tatsukuri-shidai (rice cultivation preparation)" and summer "Otaue Matsuri (rice planting festival)" continue today.
Temple Gate District Market
"Aso no Ichi (Aso Market)" selling local vegetables and Aso products is at the temple gate of Aso Shrine. Freshly harvested vegetables, jam, and local gourmet items are available โ a popular spot with tourists.
Access
Approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Hohi Main Line "Miyaji Station." One station adjacent to Aso Station.
