Nabegataki Falls: Spectacular Scenery of "Ura-mi no Taki" Viewed from Behind the Waterfall
Nabegataki Falls: Spectacular Scenery of Back-Viewing Waterfall Seen from Behind
"Nabegataki Falls" in Oguni Town, Aso-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a wide waterfall approximately 20 meters wide and approximately 10 meters tall. The greatest characteristic is being able to walk through "the back of the waterfall (ura-mi/back viewing)." The back of the waterfall where thin curtain-like water falls is a fantastical space woven by moss-covered rock faces and pale green light.
Spectacular Views Through the Green Curtain
Nabegataki Falls is characterized by a thin water curtain, with outside light appearing to glow emerald green through the water when viewed from the back. This fantastical scenery is popular as a "secret waterfall in the forest," attracting many tourists from spring through autumn.
Surrounding Tourist Spots
Oguni Town is located on the northern slope of the Aso outer rim mountains โ a tranquil agricultural area with pastures, hot springs, and old farmhouses scattered. Nearby highlights include "Nabegataki Park" and "Shimoshiro Large Ginkgo (estimated age 1,000 years)." Also, "Kurokawa Onsen" is in neighboring Minami-Oguni Town (see separate article).
Access
Approximately 30 minutes via National Route 212 from Hita City direction in Oita Prefecture. Or approximately 2 hours 30 minutes by car from central Kumamoto. Entry to Nabegataki Park is paid (voluntary contribution system).
