Hitoyoshi: A Mountain Secret Spot Where Clear River and Castle Town Are Fused
"Hitoyoshi City" in southern Kumamoto Prefecture is a mountain castle town spreading along the Kuma River. Located in a basin surrounded by Kyushu Mountains on three sides, it is a deep mountain region known as "Secret Spot Hitoyoshi Kuma." Having a special history of the Sagara family governing for nearly 700 years from 1186 to the Meiji Restoration.
Kuma River Descent and Clear River
River descent on "Kuma River," one of Japan's three swift streams, is the highlight of Hitoyoshi tourism. Various courses are available including rapids rafting (year-round) and leisurely river descent (varies by water level). Riverside scenery is beautiful throughout all four seasons, enjoyable combined with spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage.
Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins and Samurai Residences
"Hitoyoshi Castle ruins (constructed in the Kamakura period)" standing along Kuma River are designated as a National Historic Site. Partially damaged by flood damage from the July 2020 heavy rain, but restoration work is currently progressing. Edo period samurai residence ruins also remain in the castle town.
Hitoyoshi Onsen and Shochu
Hitoyoshi Kuma region is a production area for "Kuma Shochu (rice shochu)." A type of rice shochu characterized by deep flavor. Also, "Hitoyoshi Onsen" is a mild alkaline simple spring โ a famous hot spring gentle on the skin.
Access
Nearest station is JR Hisatsu Line "Hitoyoshi Station." Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes by limited express from Kumamoto Station (confirmation of restoration status after 2020 heavy rain required).
