Kumamoto Castle Ninomaru Plaza: A Space to Experience Castle Nature and History

"Ninomaru Plaza" developed on the site of the Ninomaru (second enclosure) of Kumamoto Castle is an urban park beloved as a relaxation spot for Kumamoto citizens. Leisurely strolling while viewing Kumamoto Castle's stone walls and keep at close range is possible, with seasonal nature including spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage enjoyable.

Spring Cherry Blossom Festival

Kumamoto Castle is the premier cherry blossom viewing spot in Kumamoto City. Spring when hundreds of cherry trees bloom around Ninomaru Plaza and Kato Shrine within the castle sees the "Kumamoto Castle Sakura no Baba Josaien Cherry Blossom Festival" held, attracting many flower-viewing visitors. The contrast of illuminated Kumamoto Castle and cherry blossoms at night is particularly spectacular.

Josaien

"Josaien" โ€” the castle town area of Kumamoto Castle โ€” is a facility gathering Kumamoto gourmet and souvenirs. Kumamoto's famous dishes including Kumamoto ramen, basashi (horse sashimi), karashi-renkon (mustard lotus root), and iki-nari dango can be enjoyed.

Post-2016 Earthquake Restoration

Kumamoto Castle, severely damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, has restoration work progressing. The range available for viewing is gradually expanding with expansion of special public areas.
