Kikuchi Gorge: Gorge Beauty of Virgin Forest Created by Aso Clear Streams
"Kikuchi Gorge" in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a gorge approximately 4 kilometers long located in the upper reaches of Kikuchi River. Known for unique beauty created by highly transparent clear streams with Aso's subsurface water as source, and the virgin forest and moss-covered rock faces covering the gorge. Selected among "Top 100 Forests for Forest Bathing" and "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls" (Iwa-taki, Yosomino-taki) โ one of Kumamoto's premier scenic spots.
Gorge Highlights
Many waterfalls exist within the gorge including "Otaki (large waterfall)," "Meoto-taki (couple waterfall)," and "Yosomino-taki." Walking along the promenade (approximately 4 kilometers) allows successive enjoyment of waterfalls, pools, and babbling brooks. The gorge interior is cool even in summer (approximately 13 degrees), also popular as a summer resort.
Summer Fresh Greenery and Autumn Foliage
During fresh greenery season (MayโJune), vibrant green covers the gorge, with clear streams sparkling in penetrating light being beautiful. During autumn foliage season (late October โ mid-November), gradient scenery of red, yellow, and orange adorning the gorge can be enjoyed.
Kikuchi Onsen and Kikuchi City
"Kikuchi Onsen" is near the gorge, allowing refreshing hot spring soaking after gorge hiking. "Kikuchi Shrine (god of military arts)" associated with the Kikuchi clan is also within Kikuchi City.

Bus from within Kikuchi City (few buses). Or approximately 1 hour by car from central Kumamoto.
